This safe, long lasting outdoor wood product has been in use for centuries, but only only recently has been re-introduced to the consumer. Pressure treated wood contains harmful arsenic, and western red cedar is often found in sensitive old-growth forests.

Often harvested from second and third growth forests, using strict sustainable management practices, Eastern White Cedar is not only a viable alternative, but a better selection for your next outdoor wood project.

Our customers have enjoyed the use of Eastern White Cedar for decks, stairs, fences, pergolas, lattice, ornamental furniture, tables and chairs. We have one customer that uses it for eaves trough, and another that builds elaborate gardens on the rooftops of skyscrapers!!

Sometimes known as Northern White Cedar and Eastern White Cedar, the sapwood of white cedar is thin and white, while the heartwood is a light brown. The wood has an aromatic spicy 'cedary or pencil-like' odor. It has an even grain, fine texture, and the lowest density of any commercial domestic wood (19 pcf). It is easy to work with hand tools, and is average in machineability. It is dimensionally stable, glues well and holds paint well. It is soft and has low mechanical properties (bending and compressive strength, hardness, stiffness, shock and splitting resistance and nail and screw holding ability). Northern white cedar is resistant to extremely resistant to preservative treatments.

Our quality standards require sound, tight knots, straight boards, uniform thicknesses, and a maximum wane allowance of 5% of the length of one side. Lumber is machine planed to a smooth surface, precision trimmed to length, and eased edge (rounded corners). This wood is perfect for fences decks, docks, outdoor furniture, gazebos, playground structures and many other applications.

Extremely resistant to decay, Eastern White Cedar lumber is a beautiful wood that accepts stain treatments well, or you can allow it to naturally weather to a fine gray patina.

Loyalist Forest manufactures and markets Eastern White Cedar lumber that is far superior to that which you purchase from the “big box” stores; for example our actual dimension of a 1x4 is 3/4" x 3 ½". Our white cedar lumber can be purchased either planed (smooth) or rough sawn (a textured feel). Special ordered lumber is available in custom sizes that you can’t find from the conventional lumber retailers, such as 4x6 and 5x5.
